Inauguration of Multi-Sport Hall in Bhutan
A newly built Multi-Sport Hall (MSH) in Punakha, Bhutan was inaugurated on Monday, 11th December.
The construction of the Multi-Sport Hall has been funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India with the aim to engage the community of Punakha, especially the youth, and to encourage them to participate in sports by providing them with access to quality sports infrastructure.
The total estimated cost of construction was about Nu. 30 million and the project began in 2016.
“We hope that such facilities in Punakha will encourage our youth to take out time from their schedule and participate in sports,” said Tshewang Phuntsho, General Secretary of the Punakha Sports Association.
“Right now, even though the youth are very interested in sports, the lack of sports infrastructure dissuades them from participation and hinders their development. We hope that the construction of such facilities will help promote sports and possibly develop talent in Punakha so that our youth will not only acquire the benefits of sports but also, maybe in the near future, represent Bhutan and bring us international glory.”
The Multi-Sport Hall will be handed over by the Bhutan Olympic Committee to the Punakha Sports Association for its operation and sustainable management.
The hall is designed for indoor basketball, badminton and table tennis but can also be used for other recreational and community events.
The construction of such facilities in the Dzongkhags (districts) will help to improve the quality of life in the communities, especially the urban centres, and help promote sports at the grassroots.
“The Bhutan Olympic Committee is steadfast in its mission to deliver sports to each and every Dzongkhag within the country,” said Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General of the BOC.
“We have plans of constructing Multi-Sport Halls in other Dzongkhags as well. Such facilities will not only help the local community participate in sports but also help the BOC in delivering its vision of excellence through sports for all.”
After the inauguration, a friendly basketball match was organised between officials of the BOC and a team comprising of officials from the Punakha Sports Association.
