Acting ANOC President delivers Closing Address at ANOCA Sustainability and Climate Action Conference

Acting ANOC President Robin Mitchell delivered the closing address at the ANOCA Conference today which drew a number of high-profile speakers including IOC President Thomas Bach and United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

The virtual conference was opened by ANOCA President Musapha Berraf and was held under the theme: Educate and inspire for sustainability and climate change in sport. The conference was split into three parts across the day with presentation from leading experts.

Presentations were made on the IOC Sustainability Strategy, Green building model: case study of IOC headquarters, Games Sustainability Paris 2024, UN Sport for Climate Action Framework, Waste Management and Climate Action; and Climate Change Adaptation towards building Climate-ready sport systems in Africa.

Speaking during his closing remarks, Acting ANOC President Mitchell said:

“Such events are a critical bridge to the actioning and implementation of the IOC Sustainability Strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – the SDGs. Without such discussions, mapping and consensus to articulate climate action intentions in National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and Continental Associations, the IOC Sustainability Strategy and the UN SDGs will remain largely separate from sports. This virtual conference brings the relationship between sport, development, environment, public health, sustainability and climate action together – an understanding more countries, communities, and people need.

“As Continental Associations and as NOCs that govern sports and development, and engage with athletes sports administrators and leaders on the ground, we hold one of the most powerful voices for advocacy in the world. Athletes and the various sporting platforms we belong to can become a more powerful advocate through concerted civic action.

“As acting President of ANOC, I extend a very warm and heartfelt congratulations to ANOCA and all member NOCs – thank you for leading the way for us in 2022. ANOC and the rest of the Olympic Movement look forward to hearing, seeing and reading the inspirational messages and case studies and learnings from your virtual conference.”
