ANOC Celebrates International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

ANOC today joined National Olympic Committees around the world in commemorating the power of sport to foster social change, promote peace and advance sustainable development.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, held every year on 6 April, is an opportunity for the Olympic Movement to reaffirm its commitment to harnessing the unifying potential of sport to contribute to a more harmonious society.

This year’s theme, Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies, recognises how sport can bring people together and create a shared sense of belonging.

Speaking on IDSDP, ANOC President Robin Mitchell said:

“Sport is as a universal language, which transcends cultural and societal barriers, and unites individuals and communities. Through sport we can empower and inspire hope to drive positive social development,

“It is with great sadness and regret that we continue to witness unimaginable suffering around the world caused by division, conflicts and wars. Sport cannot solve the world’s problems, but it can serve as a beacon of hope, helping to bridge divides, combat discrimination and promote social cohesion.

“We commend the NOCs all around the world who not just today, but every day, who harness the power of sport of contribute to a more peaceful, inclusive and sustainable world.”
