ANOC celebrates power of sport on International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

ANOC today celebrated the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) and the role sport can play in building bridges and fostering peace.

The IDSDP is held every year on 6 April and is an opportunity to recognise the positive impact sport and physical activity has in communities and in people’s lives across the world.

Speaking on IDSDP, Acting ANOC President Robin Mitchell said:

“There is no doubt that the world is facing very challenging times. We are shocked by the images we are seeing emerge from the war in Ukraine and the many conflicts that are taking place across the globe. During these dark times, our hope for peace and unity is stronger than ever.

“Today on the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, we are reminded of how sport has an unparalleled power to bring people together, break down barriers and promote tolerance and understanding.

“We have seen so many times before how sport can contribute to social change and encourage us all to the very best versions of ourselves. We have seen the sports world unite together in our shared values as we call for an end to violence and to giving peace a chance. Sport has built bridges and sent out messages of hope when it is needed most.

“We commend the NOC family for the solidarity they have shown and encourage them to continue to support the Olympic community in Ukraine and those within our Olympic family who need it most.

“Together, we can ensure that sport continues to make an important contribution to a more peaceful future.”
