ANOC joins NOCs in celebrating International Women’s Day to #BreakTheBias

ANOC today stood in solidarity with National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in celebrating the contribution of women around the world in the advancement of the Olympic Movement on International Women’s Day.

The theme of International Women’s Day 2022 is #BreakTheBias and calls on the international community to celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.

Led by its ANOC Gender Equity Commission, chaired by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein, ANOC works hard to improve gender equity within its own organisation and to identify ways to support NOCs in promoting gender equity. At the XXV ANOC General Assembly in October 2021 it was voted to amend the ANOC Constitution to ensure at least 30% female representation on the ANOC Executive Council.

ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg said:

“International Women’s Day is always an important moment for the Olympic Movement to celebrate the achievements of women and the progress which has been made towards gender equality. But it also an important call to action for us all to do more. This year’s theme reflects that bias does still exist but as we have seen so many times before, sport has the power to break down barriers and challenge stereotypes. The NOC family has done fantastic work in recent years, however, we all have a collective responsibility to break the bias and work towards ensuring equal opportunities for women and men to succeed across all levels of sport.”

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.
