ANOC leadership attend Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games where 74 nations and territories are competing

ANOC President Robin Mitchell and ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg attended the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games where 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories, including more than 40 National Olympic Committees, are competing.

The Games run over 11 days and 133 sessions of sport with more than 50 medal sessions in 10 sports and six Para sports.

The Games was opened on 24 July with a spectacular opening ceremony which featured King Charles and Queen Camilla emerging from a Tardis in homage to the TV show, Dr Who.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Commonwealth Sport President and ANOC Executive Council Member Dr Donald Rukare spoke of the unifying power of sport. He said:

“For the next eleven days, seventy-four nations and territories, thousands of athletes and supporters, and countless cultures and stories come together, united by one simple idea: that sport has the power to bring people together. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, that matters more than ever.

“Tonight, every flag is equal. Every athlete carries the hopes of their nation. Every volunteer, official and supporter becomes part of something bigger than themselves. That is Commonwealth Sport … not just competition, but connection … not only medals, but moments that last a lifetime.”
