Olympic Day 2019 Celebrated in Japan
Tokyo, 25 June 2019 – The Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) has held the Olympic Day Run, JOC Sports Awards Ceremony for FY2018 and the Olympic Concert 2019 to commemorate Olympic Day.
On 23 June, the Olympic Day Run was held in Shibetsu City, Hokkaido. Shibetsu City has been hosting the Olympic Day Run since 1991 and over 100 Olympians has taken part since then. More than 1,000 participants took physical actions with 10 Olympians and 2 Paralympians including, figure skater Takahiko Kozuka (JOC Olympic Movement Ambassador) and fencer Kenta Chida (JOC Athletes’ Commission). Children also had the opportunity to experience to challenge Olympians for a 50-metre race and try out Olympic sports such as tennis and badminton.
Prior to Olympic Day, the JOC has held the JOC Sports Awards Ceremony for FY2018 and Olympic Concert 2019 at the Tokyo International Forum on 14 June 2019. The Most Valuable Athlete Award, the most prestigious award among the JOC Annual Awards, was awarded to tennis player Naomi Osaka, the first Asian player to hold the top ranking in singles and the first Japanese player to claim victory at a Grand Slam singles tournament. The Special Distinction Award (Top Athlete Award) was awarded to ski jumper Ryoyu Kobayshi, who won thirteen FIS World Cup events during 2018-2019. Kobayashi became the first Japanese jumper to win the Overall title. The awarding ceremony and concert was held in the presence of JOC Council Members, JOC Executive Board Members, JOC Honorary Members, Worldwide Olympic Partners and Tokyo 2020 Partners.

Olympic Day Run in Japan In Japan, the JOC has played a central role in holding the Olympic Day Run nationwide since 1987. This event now includes more than 600,000 participants and is open to everyone. The events are easy-to-complete 2-4 kilometres courses that focus on jogging. The objective is to raise understanding of the joy of sports, the Olympic values, and Olympism by encouraging people to participate in various programs with Olympians. The 2019 Olympic Day Run will be held in 9 cities including Nagano and Tokyo with the cooperation of Tokyo 2020 Olympic Partner, JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation.
