Brazilian Olympic Committee sends athletes for training in Europe
The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) plans to send more than 200 athletes from 15 sports to train in Portugal in order to offer them a safe return to training.
Athletes with hopes of qualifying for Tokyo 2020 have been prioritised as part of ‘Mission Europe’. Athletes will travel by sport with judokas the first to travel followed by 11 boxers and 2 coaches travelling on 17 July.
The main base in Portugal will be the Rio Maior Training Center, a public-private facility 75km from Lisbon. Working with the Portuguese authorities, the COB has established strict control protocols to identify and also to prevent the spread of coronavirus. All members of the delegation are tested up to 72 hours before departure, and only allowed to travel if they registered a negative result. Upon arrival in Portugal, the team members aretaken directly to the Training Center, where they were tested again and will be in isolation for 48 hours, until the result of their test is available.
The Brazilian judokas test results came back negative on Sunday 19 July and so they were the first to engage in training.
