Grenada Women in sport Commission celebrate International Women’s Day
On Saturday 7th March 2020 the Grenada Olympic Committee, Women in Sport Commission hosted a beach event to celebrate International Women’s day. The Commission teamed up with Mrs. Deb Eastwood at “Get Grenada Swimming”, Eco Dive and Project Aware to put on a spectacular event. Female athletes, coaches and administrators from all the National Sporting Associations in Grenada were invited to the fun beach afternoon on Grande Anse Beach by the Life Guard station. The event included free learn to swim lessons with the Get Grenada Swimming coaches, volleyball lessons with the National Volleyball team, Women’s boxing with a team of British/Grenadian boxers and beach football. The event was also opened up to all local girls age 11 and over, advertised through the local schools. Through Eco Dive with project aware a special opportunity was offered. The 55 young ladies who took their first swim lesson were enrolled in a free 12-week swim lesson program with the opportunity of a snorkel trip and scuba diving at the end. The girls also received a wonderful educational talk by Christine Finney of Eco Dive, on the importance of our oceans and about Grenada’s sea life. Dr. Jane Noel, Chairwoman of the Women in Sport Commission explained to the group of over 100 girls the importance of Women’s day. She introduced them to three ladies who were honoured by the Grenada Olympic Committee (GOC) for their outstanding contribution to Women’s sport in Grenada. Mr. LaHee, President of GOC presented Mrs. Jessie Martin, Mrs. Pauline St. John and Ms. Glenda Mason-Francis with a Certificate of appreciation and a IWD T-Shirt. The girls were presented with # EachforEqual #IWD 2020 purple T-Shirts and enjoyed refreshments and DJ music.
The Commission aims to build self-esteem, team spirit and confidence in the girls to help them develop into positive role models in the community. Our thanks go to Mrs. Deb Eastwood and her team of coaches, life guards, Christine Finney, Eco Dive and Project Aware for their amazing ongoing contribution to our girls. We also thank all our National Sporting Associations who helped coach on the day, brought their girls to the event and donated refreshments. Finally, a tremendous thanks to Mrs. Dianne Hopkin and Grenada Bottling Company who always support Women in sport through donations of water and Power Aid.
The Get Grenada swimming coaches will be offering free children and adult lessons around Grenada from 14th – 18th April and July 6th-10th. Please come out and make the most of these lessons. We want to make Grenada a zero-drowning community.
Our next women’s event will take place in June for our week of celebrations running up to Olympic Day.
