ANOC mourns loss of IOC Honorary Member and former President of the Olympic Committee of PortugalFernando F. Lima Bello

ANOC is saddened to have learned that IOC Honorary Member and former President of the Olympic Committee of Portugal, Fernando F. Lima Bello, has passed away at the age of 89.

Mr Lima Bello was a world champion sailor (Snipe) in 1953 and competed at two Olympic Games, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972 (Dragon).

Mr Lima Bello served as President of the Olympic Committee of  Portugal from 1981 to 1989. He had joined the NOC in 1975 and was a member of the Executive Board from 1977 to 1980, when he attended the Games of the XXII Olympiad Moscow 1980 as Chef de Mission for the Portuguese team.

In 1989 he was elected to the IOC and he remained an IOC Member for 21 years during which time he served on a number of IOC Commissions with mostly a strong focus on the cultural and educational aspects of the Olympic Movement.

Mr Lima Bello will be sorely missed and ANOC’s thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
