ANOC mourns loss of José Ramón Fernández

ANOC is saddened to hear the news that former Cuban Olympic Committee President (COC) José Ramón Fernández has died at the age of 95.

Throughout his illustrious career, Fernández was dedicated to the development of sport in Cuba, South America and around the world. He had been COC President from 1997 until October of this year, when he retired from office as the longest-serving NOC President. He also served as a member of the Panam Sports Executive Committee and served as honorary member until his passing.

Fernández played a key role in the success of the 1982 XIV Central American and Caribbean Games and the 1991 XI Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba as President of each Organising Committee.

Away from sport, Fernández was a key official in politics in Cuba. At the time of his passing, Fernández remained an advisor to the country’s presidency and as Honorary Life President of the COC.

Fernández was a valued and highly respected member of the NOC family and he will be deeply missed. ANOC’s sincerest sympathies are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
