Brazilian Olympic Committee elects seven new inductees into Hall of Fame

The Brazilian Olympic Committee has elected seven new inductees into its Hall of Fame for 2022 following a meeting of the Evaluation Committee.

The inductees are: Manoel dos Santos (swimming), bronze at the Rome Olympic Games 1960; Marcelo Ferreira (sailing), two-time Olympic champion – in Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004 – and bronze in Sydney 2000; Ricardo Prado (swimming), Olympic runner-up in Moscow 1980; Renan Dal Zotto (volleyball), silver in Los Angeles 1984 as an athlete and several titles as coach of the men’s volleyball team; Walter Carmona(judo), bronze medal in Los Angeles 1984; and Yane Marquês (pentathlon), bronze in London 2012 and current president of Cacob. Melania Luz (athletics), three-time South American medalist and the first black woman to be part of the Brazilian delegation at the Olympic Games, in London 1948, also receives the recognition in posthumous tribute.

“It is always a special moment for the Brazilian Olympic Committee to be able to honor some of the icons of Brazilian sport. These are people who inspired generations of athletes, who marked the history of the sport in the country, so being able to remember them and pay tribute, recognizing this effort, this determination, is a joy”, said COB President Paulo Wanderley.

“Some of these stars who are now entering the COB Hall of Fame didn’t have the slightest structure to train, the least incentive. What we have today owes a lot to the athletes of the past, to their achievements, they were true trailblazers. People who have dedicated themselves fully to the sport. And we are always grateful to them”, says the director general of the COB and Olympic champion, Rogério Sampaio .

The seven elected join the 28 sports personalities who are already part of the entity’s Hall of Fame. New members will be honored at COB events and, in special ceremonies, will leave their feet or hands immortalized in molds that will be displayed in a future exhibition at the COB Training Center. In the case of Melania Luz, now deceased, a family member will receive the tribute.
