Initial components of Athlete Charter revealed
A Steering Committee of 20 athlete representatives established by the IOC Athletes’ Commission (AC) have released the initial components of an Athlete Charter. The Charter aims to address and protect the fundamental rights and responsibilities of athletes around the world and has been shaped by the input of almost 200 athletes representing all five Olympic continents.
As a next step, the Steering Committee has invited elite-level athletes to contribute to a second-phase survey which help shape the next iteration of the document. Five representatives from ANOC are members of the 20-athlete Steering Committee as well as 10 from IFs, one from the IPC, one from World Olympians Association and three from the IOC AC.
Currently organised around five key topics, the Athlete Charter addresses the most relevant issues athletes face today. These include: 1) Integrity and Clean Sport, 2) Governance and Communication, 3) Career and Marketing, 4) Safeguarding, and 5) Sports Competition. More details can be found here.
As the sports world continues to evolve, it is more important than ever to amplify the voice of athletes and empower and protect them. All NOCs should have Athletes’ Commissions to ensure that the interests of athletes are at the very heart of everything they do. With this in mind the ANOC Athletes Commission created a tool kit – which can be found here – which provides NOCs with all the necessary information and guidance on how to establish their own Athletes’ Commissions.
