Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah ensures “Growth & Optimism” for ANOC in 2014

11 December 2013; Lausanne: The Association of National Olympic Committees [ANOC] today officially announced the establishment of nine new Commissions and Working Groups, designed to add fresh impetus to the process of reform and modernisation implemented by ANOC President H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.

The Commissions and Working Groups were ratified at this week’s ANOC Executive Council meeting and given a one-year mandate, with a strong emphasis on delivering tangible and measureable results for the benefit of ANOC’s stakeholders. They will meet three times in 2014 and present their progress at the annual ANOC General Assembly that will take place in November in Bangkok. The establishment of the new specialised taskforces comes as a result of the recommendations made by the original Modernisation Commission to the ANOC Extraordinary General Assembly on 15 June 2013 in Lausanne.

The nine new Commissions and Working Groups are as follows:

Modernisation Follow-up Commission chaired by Kevan Gosper

Finance and Audit Commission chaired by Richard Peterkin

Juridical Commission chaired by Michael Chambers

Youth Working Group chaired by Lord Sebastian Coe

International Relations Commission chaired by Julio Cesar Maglione

ANOC Events Working Group chaired by H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah

Marketing and New Sources of Finance chaired by Larry Probst III

Medical Commission chaired by Robin Mitchell

Athletes’ Commission chaired by Barbara Kendall

Speaking from the ANOC headquarters in Lausanne, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said:

“This meeting of the Executive Council represents a significant landmark in the evolution of the Association of National Olympic Committees. Our new Commissions and Working Groups will ensure that recognised experts in their fields are meeting regularly on the most pressing issues facing NOCs – not just to discuss, but to take decisive action and make real progress.

“Our mission – and our duty – is to serve the interests of the NOCs. These new structures will make us better equipped to do that than ever before.”

2014 will be a pivotal year for ANOC. In early summer the organisation’s state-of-the-art new headquarters will be officially opened, and November’s ANOC General Assembly in Bangkok will feature a Gala Awards Ceremony for the first time ever.

Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah said:

“When I was elected President of ANOC in 2012, I made my objectives very clear. We have already upgraded the ANOC Constitution and work is well underway on our new home in the Olympic capital. Now we must focus on continuing to strengthen the connections between the NOCs and the Olympic Family. We are already closer to the IFs and other partners than we have ever been; these new Commissions and Working Groups will take our constructive collaboration to the next level. I am confident that 2014 will be a year of great growth and fresh optimism for the NOCs of the world.”
