ANOC is committed to sustainability and to providing a platform for National Olympic Committees to share and exchange best practice on this critical subject.

On 17 December 2020, ANOC joined the UNFCCC’s Sports for Climate Action initiative as part of its pledge to minimise its carbon footprint and ensure that sustainability is embedded into its everyday operations as well as its events. The Sports for Climate Action framework aims to support and guide sports actors in achieving global climate change goals. Key among these is that signatories are requested to commit to halving their emissions by 2030 and aiming to achieve net-zero by 2040. In December 2023, ANOC joined the Race to Zero.

Working in collaboration with the IOC, ANOC is encouraging NOCs to sign up for the Sports for Climate Action framework and to take an active role in striving towards climate neutrality. For NOCs who are interested in becoming signatories of the Sports for Climate Action framework more information on how to sign up can be found. here.

ANOC Sustainability Pledge

As a signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, the Association of National Olympic Committees “ANOC” commits to reduce 50% of its emission by 2030 (with 2019 as the base year of comparison), and reach net zero by 2040, not only by carbon credit compensation, but effective emission reduction.

In addition, ANOC commits to:

  • Measurement and transparency: measure ANOC’s emissions every year and publicize the measurement results in the sustainability page of the ANOC website.

  • Sustainable procurement process: incorporate sustainability in the organization procurement process, becoming a key decision-making factor in parallel to the economic proposals.

  • Stewardship: make the best possible efforts to support the development of the 206 National Olympic Committees in its sustainability maturity, by sharing tools, knowledge and best practices. As well as equipping them to spread the knowledge on to their own member national federations.

The present commitment shall be updated when deemed necessary, and shall be valid until 31 December 2040, when the situation should be assessed and renewed according to the present scenario at the time.
