National Olympic Committee of Ecuador

The autonomy of the Ecuadorian NOC has been restored amicably. At the time of the ANOC meeting in Moscow in April 2012, the NOC had raised the issue that its autonomy was being indirectly affected by Sports Ministry interference in the activities of the National Sports Federations. On 12 April 2012, the Sports Ministry decided not to recognise the elections conducted in 40 Sports Federations and to appoint three administrators to manage these federations and organise new elections within 90 days.

The participants of the ANOC XVIII General Assembly immediately took a resolution during the General Assembly to request the IOC to look into this matter and the IOC responded immediately by writing to the Head of State and the Sports Ministry, and by sending a circular letter to all International Federations, condemning this interference. At its meeting in Moscow, ANOC also adopted a resolution firmly condemning this government interference.

In order to resolve this situation, the IOC organised a meeting with the Sports Minister and the NOC in Lausanne on 10 May 2012. This meeting was extremely constructive and led to an agreement in principle between all the parties, respecting both the fundamental principles of the Olympic Movement and the country’s legislation. This agreement has since been formalised and signed by all the parties concerned.
