3rd gender equality Forum, ANOCA for fair, equitable and inclusive sport in Africa
Bujumbura, Burundi – The 3rd ANOCA Pan-African Forum took place in Bujumbura on 11–12 November, bringing together representatives from all 54 African countries to discuss gender equality in sport under the theme: “Unlocking potential, supporting generations.”
The Forum opened with remarks from Mrs. Lydia Nsekera, President of NOC Burundi and Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, and was graced by President Evariste Ndayishimiye, who reaffirmed Burundi’s commitment to women’s sport. The event also featured a virtual address by IOC President Kirsty Coventry, highlighting recent progress and calling for greater female leadership in sport.
A gala on 10 November honoured women leaders with Gender Equality Awards, while ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf received a Lifetime Achievement Trophy from the Confederation of African Volleyball for promoting sport and Olympism in Africa.
Key recommendations included integrating gender equality in all sports policies, ensuring safe and inclusive environments, achieving at least 40% female representation in decision-making, and promoting women’s leadership at all levels.
The Forum concluded with calls for continued collaboration to create a more equitable and inclusive sporting environment across Africa.
