ANOC mourns loss of IOC Honorary Member Lambis V. Nikolaou
ANOC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Honorary IOC Member and former Greek NOC President Lambis V. Nikolaou.
Mr Nikolaou led the Greek NOC from 1985 to 1992 and from 1997 to 2004, when Athens hosted an unforgettable edition of the Olympic Games. Mr Nikolaou was Vice President of the Organising Committee for Athens 2004, having played a key role in its candidacy. Having also organised the ANOC General Assembly in Athens in 2004, Mr Nikolaou was awarded the ANOC Order of Merit for his services to the Olympic Movement.
An IOC member from 1986 until 2015, when he became an Honorary IOC member, he served on the IOC Executive board from 2001 to 2005 when he was elected Vice-President. Mr Nikolaou also served the EOC as a member of Executive Committee across two separate terms, the first from 1989 to 1993 and then again from 1997 to 2009.
ANOC Secretary General Gunilla Lindberg said:
“Lambis was always dedicated to supporting NOCs and ensuring their voice was represented through all of his roles. I saw this firsthand, having served on both the IOC Executive Board and the EOC Executive Committee with Lambis.
“He helped to organise the ANOC General Assembly in 2004 and was a deserving recipient of the ANOC Order of Merit. The thoughts of everyone at ANOC are with his family and friends at this time.”
